The long term impact of the earthquake that unleashed deadly tsunami waves from Indonesia to East Africa last Sunday will require support from around the world. This disaster is likely to be one of costliest in history, with many billions of dollars in damage and thousands of lives lost or devastated in over 12 countries. Many people have lost everything, and millions face a hazardous future due to polluted drinking water, lack of sanitation and inadequate health services. United Way International (UWI), United Way of America, and United Way affiliates in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and east Africa are working together to respond to the southern Asia communities affected. Resources will be applied first to address the most urgent, immediate needs. InterAction, an alliance of U.S. based international developmental humanitarian non governmental organizations of which UWI is a member, is working with United Nations disaster assessment teams to assess the extent of the disaster and to establish priorities for emergency needs. A list of agencies accepting donation for immediate relief assistance can be found on their website: http://www.interaction.org/sasia/index.html.

Long term recovery, the primary focus for United Way, will take time, care and support. Our effort will focus on reconstruction; rebuilding homes, schools, health facilities, roads and bridges, replanting crops, recreating computer files and databases, providing mental health services and many other issues. The attached press release announces the creation of the United Way South Asia Response Fund, administered by UWI, to support the rebuilding of infrastructure in these devastated communities. We encourage unrestricted donations to this fund because it allows us to direct the funds to where the need is greatest. Individuals and corporations will interested in donating funds online can contribute at http://national5.unitedway.org/tsunamiresponse/. Checks should be made out to:
